Here are some interesting facts about just some of the famous fixtures that Doncaster is proud to host.The original St Leger Race, named after Lieutenant Colonel Anthony St Leger was run on Cantley Common in 1776 and wasn't moved to Town Moor (Doncaster Racecourse) until 1779. The St. Leger is the worlds oldest and longest classic race and is run over a total distance of 1 mile, 6 furlongs (1 furlong = 200 metres) and 132 yards. The Lincoln Handicap was first run in 1858 at Lincoln Racecourse. This race was not moved to Doncaster until 1965 in order that it may run over the straight mile. Doncaster offically opens the Turf Flat Racing Season with the Lincoln Meeting held each March and ends the season with the November Handicap.
